The Event Weather Story
Humble beginnings
2000 – 2003 Motivated by visionary contributions of the late Dr Joseph Gentilli, and keen interests in satellite remote sensing and atmospheric chemistry; two PhD students start exploring the possibilities of long-term weather forecasting.
2004 – Testing the merits of utilising complex algorithms and a combination of historical weather data, remote sensing satellites and global weather patterns starts. The initial concept was focused on servicing Perth and South-West Australia.
2005 – Service moves from 'numerical' based to 'real-term' prototype. Model is expanded to also include other locations in Australia such as Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.
2006 – Seeing the immense possibilities of the service, plans to turn Event Weather into a fully functional company is initiated. Further prototype modelling continues with applied statistics and further computer modelling.
2008 – 7th of January, 2008 Event Weather is incorporated. After almost 2 years of work, the first version of the Event Weather website is launched. The service provided long-term weather for 9 Australian cities.
2009 – Event Weather expands to 14 Australian cities and work starts on growing service to include a further 15 locations within the next year.
2010 – Event Weather wins iAward and forms strategic alliances with niche service companies ranging from tourism and bridal through to news media and energy.
2011 – (April) Launch of the 3rd version of Event Weather website with additional 400 Australian locations. New service providing 12 month Precast weather, 7 day forecasts and live weather conditions.
2011 – (May) Launch of the first version Event Weather Android App providing weather information for Australia, China, Malaysia and Singapore.
Providing weather for China Mobile and beyond
Event Weather's popularity surged in 2009 after the service became free to use on sign up an it quickly gained the attention of business news publications after it won the 2010 edition of WA iAwards.
In mid-2010 Event Weather's expansion efforts continued which saw it sign a landmark deal to provide weather data for the world's biggest telecommunications company, China Mobile. The deal was brokered between SmartTrans and IMApps, a mobile phone application company, of which Event Weather is one of its flagship products.
Increasing interest from Asia continued into late 2010 with the service requested by companies in key demographics of South-East Asia and India.
Due to the product's flexibility, originality and applicability to so many scenarios – Event Weather has drawn the curiosity of a broad range of industries, and is currently in several negotiations for partnerships opportunities that will potentially see it explode on the Australian and Asian markets.
Event Weather is at a very exciting chapter in its company history, and it shows no signs of slowing down.
